In the streets where the Procession and the Dance of Death pass, the streetlights are dimmed and are illuminated by the torches placed by the townspeople that Thursday morning. One of the points where the procession's passage takes on a more genuine and impressive aesthetic and visual meaning is the so-called "Carrer dels Cargols." It is so named because the entire route of this space is illuminated, following a time-honored custom, with small oil-burning lanterns made from snail shells attached to the wall with a paste made only from water and ash.

A unique atmosphere
In the middle of the night, the flickering light of hundreds of lit snail shells creates a shadow play that's as effective as it is simple, archaic, and genuine. This is another of the unique wonders that can be seen on Holy Thursday in Verges.

In recent years, this archaic lighting system can be seen not only on Orient Street, but also on some other streets where the Procession follows it.
